They told us,
"these are the best years of
you lives."
We laughed.
Sometimes high school
Is nothing but books,
Papers and tests.
It has its compensations
Victory dances,
Weekends,
Unstructured studies,
Familiar faces.
High school is more
Than just a building.
It's people.
32
As for the "complete person,"
Sometimes it seems that
High school assembles him
From odds and ends.
Maybe you wouldn't care to
Go back
And start over again,
But as June approaches.
And our world
Expands beyond the walls of
Beverly High School,
We reflect that
These were the
Best years of our lives.

Overall, Boys Cross
Country had a great
season this year. With
seven wins and only
two losses, Coach
Jellerson was pleased.
"This season was full of
hard work and smart
running." One of the
more memorable meets
was against Beverly's
long time rival,
Danvers. The boys
pulled through and won
the meet 22-33. Three
outstanding runners,
Larry Kline, JP Wioncek,
and Mike Coughlin, led
the team to victory in
many of the meets.
James McKeown and
Jeremy Sharpe also had
a great season.

Football
The Football team, under
the direction of first year
head coach Dan Bauer and
his coaching staff, played a
grueling season and ended
with a fair record of 4-7.
After finishing the non-
conference season at 2-0,
the Panthers began
divisional play with a
tough loss to Swampscott,
which began a seven-game
losing streak. The streak
finally ended with a
shutout win against
Marblehead, and the
Panthers capped off the
season with a 49-0 blowout
victory against Salem, NEC
All-Stars for the Panthers
included captains Eddie
O'Reilly and Steve Rollins,
and Randy Hurley. Both
captains were also named
Lynn Item All-Stars, and
Eddie O'Reilly received the
highest honor, the Team
MVP award. Although the
team's record with
disappointing, the future is
looking bright for the
Panthers.

Field Hockey
This fall season, BHS's
Field Hockey team has
shown great improve-
ments under new coach,
Ellen Comiskey. Their
stick skills, dodging
techniques, and plays
have evolved positively
throughout the season.
Under the leadership of
this year's captains,
Breezy Salmonson,
Alison Woitunski, and
Jillian Bourgeois, they
posted a 1-8-5 record.
The top scorer was
Breezy Salmonson with
a total of four goals. The
team's sole win against
Salem was a key source
of motivation and
perseverance. Com-
pared to previous
seasons, the team has
improved dramatically
and tied many games.
This season was a tough
one, but the girls
worked hard and their
determination paid off.

Golf
The Beverly Golf team
suffered a tough opening
day loss against
defending NEC champs,
Saugus. They regrouped
and went undefeated
until they squared off
against Salem for the
conference championship
at Olde Salem Greens.
Unfortunately, the boys
lost a heartbreaker 36 1/2
to 35 1 12. The boys took
2nd place in the
conference. For the 3rd
straight year, they
advanced to the North
Finals, but again failed to
advance after a tough
morning at Far Corners
Country Club in Boxford.
Panthers, Jeremy Mitton
and Matt Pederson,
joined the All-Star Team
and both boys finished
3rd place in the showcase
tournament, the NEC
open. The Panthers
closed out the year with a
6-2-1 record and once
again, the students on the
team made it a very
enjoyable season.

The annual Beverly vs. Salem Powder-puff Game
ended in a 16-16 tie. The girls had practiced for almost a
month.
Tianna Carr and Eva Gougian were selected as the
quarterbacks. Only players who actually showed up to
practices were allowed to play.
On game day the girls were more than ready to
crush the Witches. When they arrived at the stadium,
all of their jaws dropped when they saw the size of the
Salem girls. They realized that this was not going to be
an easy game, but they had the heart to win.
Having the Beverly community there to cheer the
Panthers on was the best feeling for the players. The
male cheerleaders were fully equipped with the big
hair and skirts.
The game started off rough, as Salem scored the first
touchdown. Soon after, Eva Gougian ran the ball in for
a touchdown, while Laura Pomponi kicked the field
goal. Amy Gill's tackle in the second half, cost
Beverly a huge penalty, but it was worth stopping them
from scoring a touchdown. Unfortunalty, soon after the
tackle, Salem scored again.
The game was coming to an end, and the Panthers
needed one touchdown to tie. Tianna Carr was on the
line. Our offensive line was holding the Witches back,
and luckily, Tianna kept the ball and found an opening.
She passed her way into the end zone for the touch-
down.
The game tied with only seconds left. As time ran
out, we knew that we were not the losers. A tie was
better than a loss and deep down we knew we had won
as a team.
Girls Basketball
The Girls Basketball
Team had a chal-
lenging season this
year, but despite
their record, they
refused to give up.
Coach Matt Smith
and Captains Paula
Raimo and Kerry
O'Neill were all very
proud of the team.
In fact, the Northeast
Conference honored
the team with the
Sportsmanship
Award. A close-knit
group, all six of the
senior teammates
have played to-
gether since middle
school. The perfor-
mance of the under-
classmen promises a
better season next
year.

coach, Bob Gilligan and with
the lead of captains Matt
Lampert, Luke Johnson and
Zack Cloutman. The team will
agree that the most memorable
game during the regular sea
son was the upset over the
Danvers Falcons with an out
standing score. Senior goalies
Matt Lampert and Taylor
Desmond stepped it up for
the Panthers, as well as new-
comers Doug Campbell and
Ryan Shairs. Cloutman and
Johnson eagerly led the Pan-
ther pack offensively and de-
fensively, but the talent didn't
end there. Lead scorer and All
Star player Brendan Fuller-ton
will keep the team strong,
along with under-class assets
Pierce, O'Hearn, Checci,
Silvio, and Boches. Congratu-
lations to the strongwilled and
determined Varsity Hockey

Aegis, the BHS literary magazine,
showcases all types of poetry,
prose, art, and photography from the
high school's best and brightest
writers and artists. Aegis takes
submissions from any BHS student.
A new collection is published three
times a year. Some of the issues
carry certain themes, such as
"Purple Haze" and "Monsters."
Every week the staff and six editors
convene to discuss upcoming issues
and review submissions. The
selections which make the final
pages of Aegis are truly worth

You Can't Take It With You
The fall play this year, You Can 't Take It
With You, was, by far one of the best plays
Beverly High has put on in a long time.
The Sycamores are a quirky, comedic
family, lead ultimately by the mother
Penny, played by junior Emily Laverdiere.
In running the family, however, she was
not alone. Sophomore Charlie Flynn
played her husband, Paul. Other members
of the family or people just living in the
household include their two daughters,
Alice and Essie (Amy Klesert), Essie's
husband (Tom Chalifour), Grandpa (Adam
Szajgin), Paul's assistant, Miss DePinna
Lauren Walk) and maid, Rheba (Sasha
Madore), and her boyfriend Donald (Greg
Nelson).
Frequent visitors of the household
include Kolenkhov, a Russian dance
teacher played by Ted Quinlan; Gay
Wellington (Leanne Hashem), a drunken
actress; the Grand Duchess Olga Katrina
(Jill Pellitier), and the government man Mr.
Henderson (Mark Deluca).
The Kirbys, the more up-scale family of
the two, consists of a mother (Emma
Stephens), a father (Sean Yeaton), and a
son (AJ Chalifour), who, coincidentally,
'alls in love with the lovely Alice Sy-
camore, played by junior Molly Kelley.
Other characters included three FBI men,
played by Garret Williams, Antonio
Hernandez, and Andy Porterfield. In both
nights of the play, the cast and crew
stunned audiences with their talent, quirky
ad-libs, old-fashioned costumes, and
elaborate set.

World of Difference is a part of
peer mediation which deals with
issues of racism, prejudice, sexism,

selecting 16 students to participate

how to solve them, specifically by

World of Difference hopes to help

Dramafest bloomed again this year. Small Town Hell, written
by Esmeralda Soufan and directed by Meghan Kavanaugh, is
a forty-five minute play about conformity in society during
the 1950s. Jillian Pelletier played the main role of a teenage
girl who questions the ideals of her community. They com-
peted on February 28th at Marblehead High School. The
judges raved at the performance, and the group recived a
standing ovation from the other competing schools. Sarah

VQGAIa ENSEMBbE
The Vocal Ensemble is an audition-only, a capella singing group of about 50 members. It is led
Ms. Carolyn Pilanen. The vocal emsemble often receives invites to perform at various breakfast!
meetings, and other gatherings. It can also be seen at the high school concerts and during the pe
rallies, where they sing the National Anthem.
When marching season ends, concert band
begins. Everyone who participates in
marching band is automatically a member of
the concert band. During the concert season,
the band performs in the winter, the all-city,
and the spring concerts. They also compete
during the spring music trip, which will be
in New York City this year. Mr. Ray Novack
leads the concert band, which is composed of
members of the Jazz Band, the Concert
Choir, the Vocal Ensemble and sports teams.
They work hard to ensure that the music
they play entertains their audiences and
earns them a high ranking in their competi-
tions.
JAZZ BAND
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an audition-only group
with few members on each part. Be-
cause of the level of difficulty of many of
the pieces, rehearsal outside of school is
sometimes necessary. This group, led by
Raymond Novack, can be seen at many
competitions and other various perfor-
mances. After an exhilarating perfor-
mance, the jazz band always leaves the
audience on their feet.
